In 1988, May 7 was announced before Congress as National Homebrew Day. The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) celebrates with an annual event called AHA Big Brew. AHA Big Brew is held each year on the first Saturday in May. I know, we missed the first Saturday of the month, but it’s Homebrew month so we can continue to celebrate.
Have you always wanted to get into homebrewing but are feeling overwhelmed by it? Don’t worry, I was there, too. Until I discovered the wonderful world of one-gallon batches. It doesn’t yield as much beer as the 5-gallon version, but it’s perfect for me. I am not stuck with a bunch of beer that maybe I don’t love. I have a lot of fun exploring new styles and trying out different, weird things.
Heck, I’ve had so much fun with it over the last couple of years, that I wrote a book about it! There are many ways to ease into the hobby that don’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Check out the good folks at Northern Brewer or at Midwest Supplies — both have starter kits of varying investments. I got started with a kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop and it was all downhill from there.
It’s a fun hobby that you can do with friends and a great way to share fruits of your labor. So don’t be afraid to try something new this year and give a shot. Let me know how it goes and feel free to ask me any questions! Good luck and happy homebrewing!
