October 4 – a day which celebrates many things!

Thanks to my loyal Twitter pals for informing me that today is not only National Taco Day (nom nom nom) but National Vodka Day! I am not sure how I missed this wonderful news, but it made it to me so all is good now. 🙂

I did know, however, that today is the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi. One of my favorite quotes from him is: “I have been all things unholy. If God can work through me, he can work through anyone.” I don’t know about you, but that really describes my life in a pretty amazing way! God is awesome in how He works in our lives. I am truly blessed.

Something else that is pretty amazing is vodka. Vodka is said to have been created by alchemists more than 600 years ago. Both Russia and Poland claim to have been the birthplace of this pure liquid spirit – who knows who is right and who is not.  Vodka is one of the most unique and versatile spirits in the world.

How versatile? Besides the Drinkie purposes, vodka was a key ingredient in gunpowder in the Middle Ages. Some more modern uses include adding a splash of vodka to your shampoo to help to stimulate the growth of healthy hair and dabbing a band-aid with vodka to dissolve the adhesive so you can remove it painlessly! Who knew?

There are so many different things you can do with vodka: martinis, well drinks, Bloody Mary’s, punches, shots … so I’ll share a couple recipes of my favorites! I prefer Grey Goose for sure, but there are many merits to the other vodkas as well – especially if you are going for a certain flavor!

My Absolut favorite (pun intended) vodka drink is an Appletini. I could drink these all night long and never grow tired of them! There are many variations of this beverage but this is one of my favorites.

2 oz. vodka
1 oz. apple Schnapps
big ol’ squeeze of fresh lime juice
*Stir ingredients together with crushed ice in a cocktail/martini glass, and serve. I’ve had it served with a cherry garnish in the bottom of the glass or a thinly sliced Granny Smith apple round. Both are delicious.

A screwdriver is a go-to beverage for anytime of day, but definitely for brunch if you don’t like champagne.

6oz Orange Juice
1.5oz Vodka
*Mix over ice and enjoy.

I used to make this mixed drink all the time in college. My friends LOVED it so much they would all stop by my room on the way out and I’d make a round!

… on the Beach
1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
2 oz cranberry juice
2 oz orange juice
*Add vodka and peach schnapps to a highball glass over ice. Fill with equal measures of cranberry juice and orange juice, and stir.

This is definitely my favorite shot. And it’s not very potent if you just have one, so don’t worry about temperance on this!

Lemon Drop
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz lemon juice
1 teaspoon of sugar
Add sugar to the rim of the shot glass. Pour vodka and lemon juice into a stainless steel shaker over ice, and shake until completely cold. Pour into the shot glass and enjoy!
